This is the human variant of Chronic Wasting Disease.

Contagious if you come in contact with brain or nervous system tissue or fluid.

very interested to learn how the patient became infected, it can be hereditary but most of the known cases are sporadic onset without many common factors.

Neither of Channel 5's reporter or anchor could pronounce the name correctly, nor did they give any information regarding the disease or how it could be spread.

Would be crazy if it's connected to the CWD found in the elk.

Not good. I'd hate to have had surgery there recently. Extremely low odds, but still scary.

I'm not of a very scientific mind, so the Wikipedia article confused me a little. From what I can tell, it's either genetic, or caused by someone consuming proteins from a person infected with it. It would make sense to me that some matter left from an improperly sterilized OR could transmit it to someone, so I feel pretty certain that's the case.

It also said that it may be possible to get it from blood transfusions.

That's cray cray.

Can't it be passed from cows to humans? There was a shitload of this in the UK a decade or so ago. Horrible stuff.

Most UK beef is banned elsewhere because of that outbreak.
