Highly recommend doing this. Dublin is a really cool city with plenty to do for 3-4 days, but the charm of Ireland is renting a car and exploring the country. I spent a month in Dublin and I enjoyed our trips to Gallway and Belfast the most. Cliffs of Moher are breathtaking and worth your time. Although, I might elect to spend a day or two doing the Ring of Kerry and staying a night in a B&B on this route. LINK

I was in college when I went, so I spent most of my time in pubs acting like a 21 year old should. Going back I would do a lot the same, but would spend more time exploring the country with a rental car/hiking.

I would agree, just be aware that renting a car is a huge pain in the arse in Ireland. Be sure to Google advice for showing up because it could take forever.
