I have taught for more than fifteen years. I certified in two fields as well as National Board Certified. I have a masters and have been accepted to a PHD program.
I have had my background checks done by local, state and federal authorities as well as interpol.
I have never even been convicted of a misdemeanor. I had one speeding ticket in my life, and it was removed after going to a class.
Yet I still cannot teach in Pennsylvania.
After Sandusky, they passed a new law. You have to mail a paper form to your former employer where they again verify you never had any convictions of child abuse. Your old employer has to mail it back.
Ten years ago, I taught in Canberra, Australia. Now I have to find someone who will receive this form, go back through ten years of records, fill out the form and send it back to me.
It is about to make my head explode. Especially since I have already been teaching for the last nine years in the United States.
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

You need something from 10 years ago specifically, not just your last 9 years in the US? So, all of your previous employers?

Wow, that's some all around stupid right there. Your previous employer isn't going to have any better information than they can get themselves.
In Alabama you've got to submit a fingerprint and the State Bureau of Investigation does a criminal background check. May take a little while, but otherwise it is easy on both the applicant and the employer and unlike what you're going through it will actually find convictions.

I get the reasons behind this policy, but wouldn't the FBI be much more equipped to know if you've been convicted of child abuse? There was an Au Bon Pain worker on campus who was under investigation for it and no one ever knew until he was formally indicted. Employers don't know everything.
Have you taken the "Sandusky Test" (Preventing Child Abuse at Penn State)?

Do you teach English? Check your second sentence.

Just omit working in Australia from your job record. You are under no obligation to disclose what you were doing there.
BTW I seem to recall you are one of the leftists on the PT board. Irony at its finest

Obviously it sucks and it's shitty that there's not a way they can expedite that process.
This:
Should've been enough to clear you from an international aspect. Or at least give you temp employment in the process while you get the additional info from Australia.
All of that said, especially having worked in education long enough to see some really fricked up shite, I understand the need for the process.
Some of my favorite kids to work with.
