If those Cops worked for the cartels, they probably would have arrested the guy that got executed and delivered him alive to the Hitmen so they would kill him.

This just looks like one of those situations in which Cops know not to interfere for their own good (known as plata or plomo, nowadays being just 'vida or plomo') It's just mind boggling imaging something like that happening so close to U.S. soil. The cops who ran claimed they retreated because they were outnumbered and outgunned. But that's BS. It's obvious they aren't risking their own lives (and thereafter their own family's) for a measly $20 US Dollars a day.

It's very unfortunate for the people down there who can't depend on their own government for protection, but can expect their military to knock on their door anyday and search for firearms in their property (Yes, their government does actual gun sweeps). Gun control advocates should be shown the effects of having strict gun control in Mexico.
