If you're talking Detroit or Flint or Saginaw, yeah. Ann Arbor? Not so much. And I lived in upstate Michigan, which is even more different. The rest of Michigan is nothing like the Detroit area. It's pretty middle-to-upper class up there, with a lot of conservative politics, guns, and nice houses on the lake.
