I was responding to someone saying that before Saban, Alabama was a top 5 program. I responded by saying they hadn't been ranked in the top 5 since 1994 or even highly with a few exceptions. It's very clear, in the context, this refers to the final polls.
I don't know who would ever care about pre-season rankings or where you are in the middle of a season for determining this. It's irrelevant.
