Sometimes it's not that simple. I apparently drove on a suspended license for a year without having the faintest idea. The only reason I found it is it came time to renew my license and I couldn't. To make a long story short: I apparently got a ticket in some podunk town but I never got the ticket sent to me in the mail so didn't pay it. They suspended my license without me ever knowing it.

It really should be that simple. If I got a ticket anywhere, Podunk or NYC, I know that I either have to pay it or contest it. You should have made some calls to get the ticket sent to you rather than get embarrassed at the DMV.
