Auburn's record Under Gus Malzahn:
2013 12-2
2014 8-5
2015 6-6 plus Birmingham bowl

Most decent coaches record tend to go the other direction. How bad is this guy?

Your team is playing in the CFP & all you can think about is Auburn.

That is not relevant because his record at MSU is all that matters and it is pretty even

Your years are wrong, but MSU was coming off probation when he got there, not 1 and almost national championships.

You are way overvaluating AU. mSU is in the cfp and toledo was 9-2.

au is more in line with vandy and Kentucky.

I'm glad we don't have him. His defense is gonna cost him 3 games a year at best. He caught some big-time breaks in '13 when he should have lost to State, UGA and Bama in addition to LSU and would have been gone probably after this season.

Actually, no. They were put on probation a year after he was there, for violations that happened with the previous head coach(which Saban was also part of his staff years before)

Actually most coaches in the "Big 6" follow a trajectory similar to Gus'. Maybe not quite as big of a fall, but its becoming very common to have huge success in the first 2-3 seasons.

Gene Chizik
22-5 in his first 2 seasons (81.5%)
11-14 in seasons 3 and 4 (44.0%)

Will Muschamp
18-8 in his first 2 seasons (69.2%)
11-13 in seasons 3 and 4 (45.8%)

Les Miles
34-6 in his first 3 seasons (85.0%)
78-26 ever since (75.0%)

Mark Richt
32-8 in his first 3 seasons (80.0%)
113-43 ever since (72.4%)

Urban Meyer
22-4 in his first 2 seasons (84.6%)
50-17 from that point on (74.6%)

For whatever reason, we're seeing a lot of coaches in the conference start out with a bang and then falter a bit from there.

Chizik, Meyer, and now Malzahn all played for a National Title in their first 2 seasons in the SEC.

Richt's best season out of 15 was in his 2nd year at Georgia.

Les Miles' only National Title came in Year 3.

Now we are seeing Jim McElwain do in Year 1 what Will Muschamp was only able to do in Year 2: Win 10 or 11 games with a team that looks completely unimpressive to the eye... yet somehow due to a favorable schedule come up with a very good record.

My guess is in four years McElwain will find himself in a similar situation Muschamp did in Gainesville.

I think a lot of it is the energy of a new hire, especially when morale was bad under the previous coaches. The good coaches can sustain that after a couple of years.
All the teams you mentioned have recruited well and had some critical pieces in place when the new coaches took over.

One of the reasons for that may be because ADs are firing coaches the year before expected success (more experience coming back, etc) in order to give that more successful year to the new coach instead of it making it harder to drop their old hot seat coach. As result, new coaches are seeing success in the first year or two, and then a drop as the natural cycle goes. And then they're not giving them enough time for the cycle to come back up again.
