Donnan knew Xs and Os and played a much tougher schedule than CMR played the last five years.

Of course he played a much tougher schedule. Florida and Tennessee were in the hay days and Tech was tough then too.
He was a good offensive coach. There is no denying that. Bobo's first job as an administrative assistant to Donnan.
I read one time where he said if he had known his job was on the line he never would have red shirted Green. Right played with Donnan's recruits. Green, Pollack ect.

Donnan was really prickly and communicated poorly with fans. That cost him.
He hitched his star to Quincy's wagon. To this day not many people know the full story with Quincy, but it was damn sure something shady. That REALLY cost him.
Donnan had sporadic defensive play and Ramsey was a disastrous hire. He's have been better sticking with Kines. Towards the end Gibbs had the defense stabilized, but of course having Stroud and Seymour on the D-line helped.
Donnan got into a pissing contest with Adams. Stupid, and THAT was the ultimate reason for his firing.
BUT Donnan SERIOUSLY upgraded the talent level from Goff. It was a brilliant turn around.
His offensive scheme was really good. He knew how to mix tough running and all out passing. He threw some option in. He did the wildcat with T. Edwards way before it became a fad. In fact Bobo has been quoted as saying he took a lot of his offensive philosophy from Donnan as opposed to Richt. Hard to argue with Bobo's results.
Donnan was cocky and had some swagger. That was something sorely lacking under Richt.
Donnan is very smart. He's on the radio here in Athens a lot. He remembers details from college football games for 5 decades running. He still studies the game and knows the principal players. He is a great judge of athletic talent. He may not be able to jump in and coach a team in 2016 but he is an authority on the game. You better believe that.
He was also very gracious towards Richt always. Never any bitterness. He refers to UGA as 'us' and still publicly considers himself a dawg. Give him credit for that.
Donnan really made his own bed that led to his firing (as detailed above) but he also laid the foundation for Richt's 2002 and 2005 teams. Hard to say how much continued success he'd have had at UGA but I was very disappointed with trading Donnan for Richt at the time.
