LSU wasn't ranked #2 in pre-season nor early season.

Pre-season rankings are pure bias and pure stupidity. Anything AP related is horseshite.

Not purely, no. Yes, there's bias and lots of guessing, but there's at least some intel involved. Nobody was ranking us for an excellent reason -- we hadn't shown any reason for anyone to believe us to be good. They were ranking LSU, Bama, UGA, and so forth for another good reason -- all of them had significant talent returning, with coaches that, to some greater or lesser degree, had proven capable of leading teams to victory. Obviously these rankings are not perfect. Hell, they can be downright abysmal. But for every misfire, there's a decently accurate prediction as well. Bama and Ohio State proved the prognosticators right. Auburn and GT proved them wrong. It's only fair to acknowledge the hits if we're going to bitch about the misses.
