OSU will only be because they play a major cupcake schedule.
Bama may be because that university has thrown more money into that program than anything on the planet.
Bama is very similar to USA when it comes to spending. I mean Bama spends more on football then the next however many teams combined while USA spends more on military than the next 10 countries combined.
Is it necessary? Probably not. Do they have the best program and military year in and year out? Yes
It's all a matter oh how much your willing to spend to get what you want. Some teams can stay competitive without breaking the bank which is all they want.
