No, the best thing possible for these young men would have been calling them on their bullshite.

"We felt we needed to do something or this young man was going to die."

His response should have been, "well boys, people are dealt much worse hands on a daily basis and die from all kinds of things in this world, most of them unfair. If this kid wants to commit suicide by not eating though, that is his choice and this team will have no part in it. Anyone who feels different can leave at any point"

That would have been literally the worst possible thing he could have done.
