If you look at this from a business perspective, there are certain positions where you should never hire people that require on-the-job training to perform.
Sumlin fell into this trap when he elevated Spavital. Spavital did not have years of proven experience as an offensive coordinator. He may turn out to be an outstanding offensive coordinator/head coach some day. We have been paying the price for him to learn on the job.
Sumlin went with an experienced hand when he changed DC. He also went with an experienced hand when he changed the OL coach. I expect he will do the same thing if/when he chooses to make a change at OC.

Spav was 27 when Sumlin hired him.

That's a plausible scenario. Who are some realistic "experienced hands" to take over as OC?
