Your number one goal as a head coach is to win championships and if I were a head coach, I'd want to be at a school that has shown they can constantly win titles under numerous coaches. I mean yeah, a legendary coach can come into a "2nd tier" school and stack up 3-4 titles but does that them a great/attractive program? I don't think so.
Below is taken straight from the NCAA website. I only looked up SEC schools and know some of the programs below claim additional titles and some claim less but this gives us a general foundation.
FBS National Championships (NCAA)
Alabama 13
LSU 4
Florida 3
Auburn 2
Tennessee 2
Texas A&M 2
Arkansas 1
Georgia 1
Ole Miss 1
Number of Head Coaches who've won a National Championship(s)
5 Alabama
4 LSU
2 Florida
2 Auburn
2 Tennessee
2 Texas A&M
1 Arkansas
1 Georgia
1 Ole Miss
