Spurrier did us a big favor this week. He could have made it through the year. It wouldn't have changed his legacy, and he knew if he up and quit now he would open himself up to a lot of critics to take shots at him. However, he understood how much better it would be for the program if he would go ahead and leave now so that the process of replacing him could start, and it would give us the best chance to identify our top targets and stabilize our recruiting. Had he waited until December, there would be many more openings, early entry recruits would get second thoughts without time to soothe things over, and the program would look bad as if we forced him out. This really was the best possible outcome given the circumstances, and coach deserves credit for that.
