Not at Michigan
He took at team that lost to App St the year before he got there and had an improved his number of games won every year (3 years.) He recruited players for his system and when Hoke took over, Hoke won 11 games his 1st year with Rich's players. Then Hoke fell apart.

That same team finished 9-4 (6-2) and beat the 2007 Florida team led by Heisman winner Tim Tebow in the Citrus Bowl.
That loss at home to App St, combined with their aging HC killed their image and program. Rich was brought in to repair it and he was doing that.

The powers at Michigan never wanted Rich Rod. He was a horrible fit there from day one.
If he's the backup-backup-backup candidate, I think he'd be just fine, and ultimately successful here.
As for the Big 3, I really am happy with any of them.
My concern about Fuente is his ability to recruit- but we know he can coach his tail off.
My concern with Smart is his ability to lead a program-but we know he can recruit and assemble a staff.
My concern about Herman is his willingness to move on for the UT or similar blue blood job-but we know he can recruit and coach.
I think any of the three could have Carolina contending for conference titles by Year 3. This program has so much more going for it than when Holtz was here, or when Spurrier started.

That one loss was not enough to excuse taking over a 9-4 (6-2) team and then going:
3-9 (2-6)
5-7 (1-7)
7-6 (3-5)

He started with 3 wins. Not really anywhere to go but up.
