This is exactly what I'm wondering.


Besides, the rule isn't that you can't recover the ball until it hits the ground, it's that you can't recover it until the returner has a chance to bring in the bobbled ball.

In this particular case the returner bobbled it in the air, attempted to catch again, and instead of recovering it basically tossed it to the Vandy player who was standing in place and in no way interfering with his recovery of the kick.

I just don't understand how you can expect a guy to play hot potato when the ball is delivered directly into his hands.

It's a judgement call by the official at that point. The idea that an official could make that call in that situation is a perfect point of reference to the incompetence of the often maligned SEC officiating.
