I am convinced more and more each week that the 1 player that no matter how much talent or lack of talent you have there MUST be an absolute playmaker at quarteback in a pro style offense. Spread teams for the most part can trot out a decent QB and be successful bc the system largely makes the player. In a traditional pro set, the days of the game manager are LONG gone. Just look at Alabama...10 yrs ago you could hide your QB and be very very successful. Now you must have an NFL caliber guy under center to have legitimate success in today's college pro style offenses. Stanford, NFL qb... Mich state, NFL qb... Alabama not an NFL qb. I firmly believe that for a traditional team to beat the modern explosive spread teams consistently you have to have a guy that if your defense breaks down and you get into a shootout...he can make the big time NFL throws and put the team completely on his back. Arkansas simply does not have that guy right now. Petrino's system and philosophy was totally centered around the quarterback position and Arkansas was able be very good. Bert's overall track record is not that. He wants a game manager in every sense of the word. Wilson not included, how many big time play making quarterbacks had he had? If Bert keeps his job after this year's 3-4 win season(which of course he will bc of our genius AD's decision to raise Bert's buyout and give him an extension) Town/Storey/whoever better be an elite college passer or Arkansas will continue to struggle. If Arkansas does not run a system that can make up for the drastic talent gap they must have an NFL type quarterback... and I just don't think that guy is on the current or future roster ..but what's it all really matter...no matter how bad it gets...We are stuck with Bert. It is insane for anyone to pony up $15.6 mil to fire someone. Long has hitched our wagon to this guy.
