Well, was Ellis just that much better or has the talent dropped that much?

Ellis was never as good as people wanted to believe, see what he did at Southern Miss and then Auburn, but he had incredible talent while he was here. Give him credit for being the main recruiter on several of those players though. But you or I could have coached Clowney, Gilmore, Ingram, Quarles, Taylor, Robertson, Holloman, Allen, etc. to a top 20 defense. The talent is light years behind where we were just a couple years ago.

I think it's just a mix of Ellis being better and Ward being that much awful. Coupled with a talent dropoff, and in the case of last year, trying a new defensive scheme then ditching it after 2-3 games...Here you go.

Ellis was a great fit for whatever reason. Lawing also always had our line playing to its potential and I think losing him hurt us the most. It wasn't just Clowney by any stretch of the imagination. We're still getting solid DL recruits but aren't seeing the same results.

I just think the coaching has been really really bad. That, combined with the players being not as good.

I still think with decent coaching the USCe defense could be at least just a normal level of suck and not a record setting level of suck.
