I'd like to get a defensive minded coach.

That's always been Carolina's identity. The 33-6 run was due to nasty defense and timely offense. Before that, Holtz's best teams were predicated on strong defense and no offense whatsoever.

I wouldn't be shocked, at all, to see Strong here after UT lets him go. He's a bad fit in Austin, but that doesn't preclude him from doing well here.

Real talk: is it better to go the coordinator route (Smart, Foster, etc.), the established-at-a-smaller-school route (Fuente, Hudspeth, Herman), or the bad-fit-or-NFL-coach route (Schiano, Strong)?

I'd like to see Strong here. He's a bad fit for UT but like you said that doesn't mean he'll be a bad fit here.

The biggest reasons he'd be a fit here is that he is a defensive guy and he's known for recruiting the southeast.

I would be shocked to see him here as a HC. We're going to go after a winner, not after a guy who got fired from his last job.
