Ole Miss decided to make an example of him it seems. The legal justification for the particular punishment (recognizing, of course, that he deserves to be punished in some other manner) seems tenuous at best. But Ole Miss has been embroiled in a PR battle to reclaim their image, and they found a way to send everybody a message.

people REALLY need to stop saying Ole Miss had anything to do with this prosecution. The state of Mississippi didn't even have anything to do with this prosecution. This was a federal charge brought on by the Attorney General Eric Holder. Ole Miss' only involvement was kicking the kid out of school, which he deserved. The District Attorney of Lafayette County MS did not bring any criminal charges because the act did not fall under the required elements of any criminal statute in MS. The repeated ignorance of people making this about Ole Miss is getting old. That's not what happened. Yes this was absolutely a politically motivated move, but not by Ole Miss.
