Yeah, because getting his arse kicked daily by black people or joining the Aryan brotherhood for protection is really going to "get that bullshite out of his system". Instead he could have done community service and actually seen the plight of what minorities go through and sympathize with them.

Ole Miss decided to make an example of him it seems. The legal justification for the particular punishment (recognizing, of course, that he deserves to be punished in some other manner) seems tenuous at best. But Ole Miss has been embroiled in a PR battle to reclaim their image, and they found a way to send everybody a message.
