Obviously it worked out but I did think he got a raw deal. Got you through brutal penalties and even delivered you a awfully good 2005 season in the process. I thought he should have gotten a chance to see what he could do without the draconian sanctions handcuffs on him.

I am beginning to think that was one of the most impressive coaching jobs I've seen in all my years watching SEC football.

In '05, Shula had a talented but oft-injured QB (with no backup), a second-tier OL and maybe 3 SEC-caliber skill players on the entire offensive roster - and (admittedly due to his own blunder in the UF game) his best weapon on that side of the ball suffered a career-ending injury in game 5. Granted, they had some decent talent and solid coaching on defense, but they had no business being undefeated and #3 in the BCS going into their last two games.

If they had managed to hold off LSU in o/t, that Iron Bowl would have truly been one for the ages.

The only team he beat with a pulse on that schedule was Tennessee. When we played real defenses in LSU and Auburn the game was not as close as the score indicated. There's a reason why every other conference for liked him.
