Doesn't the 5 year clock continue running once it starts, even if you take a year off?

I think you can request a waiver on that. Similar to injuries or the guy at OU who got a waiver on the year he took off after giving his friend brain damage in a drunken rage. His waiver would be submitted based on "my coach turned out to be the grand master of rape-enabling, so I left". I'm not saying it's going to be granted for sure, but I think that's what he is after.

That or maybe he doesn't want to risk injury playing for a pointless JUCO team? I mean, if I had his talent, I wouldn't.

Yes.

If he played Juco, he would transfer and play 2 years at a big school.

If he sits, he can transfer and play 3 years at a big school.

You get a 5 year running clock to play 4 years. Split it however you'd like. His transfer is unique because he doesn't need to burn that year proving his worth (Didn't get kicked off, wasn't buried in depth chart, didn't have grade issues.)
