I don't know about the free education bit but I agree with the rest of what you said. College athletes in all sports from football to rowing to gymnastics work their asses off as do many other non-athletes. College is a once in a lifetime thing, you might stay a year or two longer than most, but theirs a limited timeframe, especially if you play sports, to do all the things you want to do and accomplish your goals athletically and academically as well as any other you might have -- opportunities that you often only have while in college.
