Worst thing that happened was that Sully received the award three days before the most important game of his life. I don't know that it would have made a difference in the outcome, but I wonder if the distraction of winning college football's most prestigious award (and the travel involved in attending the Downtown Athletic Club banquet to accept it) on a Wednesday night might have affected his performance the following Saturday afternoon.
If we're talking about the 1971 Iron Bowl, I don't think Sullivan's fatigue could have made a 24-point difference against a defense that allowed 10.2 points per game.
