Worst Heisman choice since John Huarte (who? - you can look it up) in 1964

Actually, that would be Pat Sullivan.

Remind us how his last Iron Bowl went?

Jason White, Gino Torretta say hi.

WOAT: Terry Baker, Oregon State QB, who, on national TV, had a 95 yard QB keeper - his highlight play of the year.
He won over consensus All-American LSU Safety and kick returner Jerry Stovall - who went on to 9 Pro Balls with the St.Louis Cardinals.

In the "modern" age (post integration, scholly limits) I agree that Bo and Herschel were the two best. I think D Mac is a clear #3. He was amazing to watch, had fantastic numbers, and could very well have won the Heisman. IMO those three guys all have spots in the pantheon. If Arkansas had won an SEC championship I think he would more often make it a conversation of who is the fourth best after those three guys. The fact that he didn't do much in the NFL also hurts, even though this is about college careers.

Faulk, Smith, and Shaun Alexander are IMO, the next level down, and I wouldn't argue with any of them being in there (as long as the top 3 were also included). After that you get guys like Cadillac and Mark Ingram. Fantastic players in college, but not transcendent.

Not as good as his first two.

Quick, tell me who was more deserving, based on statistics and level of competition, than Sullivan was in 1971.

Worst thing that happened was that Sully received the award three days before the most important game of his life. I don't know that it would have made a difference in the outcome, but I wonder if the distraction of winning college football's most prestigious award (and the travel involved in attending the Downtown Athletic Club banquet to accept it) on a Wednesday night might have affected his performance the following Saturday afternoon.
