Alabama practice report: An early look at the offensive line

TUSCALOOSA -- Alabama continued preseason practice with its second of 28 workouts before the season opener versus Wisconsin in Arlington, Texas. Today, we focused on the offensive line to get a feel for who is lining up where.
Here are some takeaways:

--The first offensive line group has carried over from spring practice. From left tackle to right tackle: Cam Robinson, Ross Pierschbacher, Ryan Kelly, Bradley Bozeman and Dominick Jackson.

On Thursday, Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said the team would focus on getting the five best players out there before worrying about continuity so don't be surprised if this group changes.

--The second offensive line group from left tackle to right tackle: Korren Kirven, Isaac Luatua, J.C. Hassenauer, Alphonse Taylor and Brandon Greene.

--Some freshmen offensive line notes: Brandon Kennedy took reps at center, Matt Womack lined up at right tackle, Richie Petitbon was at right guard, Lester Cotton worked at left tackle and Dallas Warmack was at left guard.

--On Thursday, Saban said cornerback Tony Brown worked with the 2s, but Brown was once again at the front of the line opposite Cyrus Jones during the media's viewing period. It's worth noting that things can change once reporters leave the field. Still, Brown appears to be poised for a big role barring something unforeseen.

--Defensive end Jonathan Allen still appears to be dealing with a shoulder injury. Allen wore a big brace on his left shoulder and had to get extra tape at one point.

--Add defensive lineman Darren Lake to the list of guys who really transformed their bodies this offseason. Lake appears to be in great shape.

--Denzel Devall and Ryan Anderson are the first two outside linebackers through drills followed by Tim Williams and Rashaan Evans. Saban said Thursday that Evans should have an impact on the team in a situational role. The good thing about having a guy like Devall is that he can play both outside linebacker spots.

Devall has been underwhelming since his freshman year. Anderson took a step last year. I think our starting 4 LBs in base defense should Evans at Jack, Lee at Sam, Foster at Mike, and Ragland at Will and always on the field every play like CJ Mosley.
