I'll make an observation or two on Garrett and the A&M defense.

I made a point to replay and break down last year's LSU vs A&M game on DVR for my 14 yo son and teammates the other night. They were more interested in LF burying your secondary enforcer, but I wanted them to isolate on the LSU running game at the point of attack.

I would like to say that Garrett got winded to explain his performance, but truth is, he was beat from the get go. And that's alright, he was a freshman. But something that stood out to me was how often he was lined up on the opposite side of Collins. So, it really didn't matter much who drew that assignment, Garrett just wasn't a factor.

And that too is understandable. His forte' is edge rushing, right? But don't sit here and tell me he is a 4-3 contain guy. Just not true to this point in his career. At least not vs the teams that really matter.

Now, as far as A&M and their defense is concerned, they've got big problems. Sumlin can use Snyder as a scapegoat, and maybe he really sucked as a coordinator. But A&M's biggest problem on defense is that their offense can't control the ball. It's far too dependent on timing and the passing game.

QB can't have an off day, defense can't be good in press coverage, weather can't be cold, windy, or rainy. And even on days where the stars align, they blitzkrieg points, then can't control the ball and the clock when it matters. All of this leaves the defense on the field. And sure A&M has the same depth as everyone else, but not the same caliber on defense.

You have to be able to get short yardage first downs and stop them to win championships. Chavis had good success at LSU, but largely due to our offense controlling the ball and the defense being rested with quality depth as well. Chavis went into early retirement at A&M.

Good luck.

We've had a thread on this. Chavis Defense doesn't require Time Of Possession. Next.
