Yeah that stadium is basically built into the ground, pretty much the same way Michigan Stadium is. I always wondered why more stadiums weren't built that way, would seem to be easier to build.

The reason is viewing angles. The Big House is very shallow, so most of the fans aren't very high up, but they're pretty far away from the field. To get a good viewing angle from digging into the stadium, one must either dig very steeply (which can get costly, deep, and dangerous), or have most of the stadium above grade.

The reason LSU has such great viewing angles is how steep it is. You're practically on top of the field.

The first 32 rows of The Swamp are below the surrounding land, it was built into a depression that existed on campus.
