I think the reason more people expect more out of Malzahn's offense than Sumlin's is because they still doubt whether a pass-first offense can be successful in the SEC. Many just attribute the dominant offenses of 2012-2013 to the unique talents of Manziel. The thinking is those performances were anomalies. While for Auburn, the thinking is there was no single transcendent player responsible. Maybe a lot of good players, but no once-in-a-generation players.
I'll admit this thinking isn't unreasonable.
