You aren't going to be able to poach anything away from the B1G. B1G schools get billions of dollars in federal dollars for research because of all of the memberships they have and partnerships between universities.
For athletics, the B1G is still richest conference and will get even richer once the new TV deal is done in 2016/17 (not sure on the exact date at the moment).
The B1G is working to expand to a national conference - coast to coast.
John Hopkins has already joined the B1G. Boston is joining. ASU hockey is joining. Colorado State is joining (creating hockey).
The B1G will continue to grab some schools from the west/southwest. The B1G would love to have an "umbrella" surrounding the SEC states.
