This. Nashville is by far and away the best option, and it's extremely cheap. I would take Athens second. I have never been to college station, Tuscaloosa, or Oxford, but they sound top notch for small cities.

Auburn is a small town with a Walmart and some fields, nothing wrong with that of its what you want. I live outside of Columbia in Lexington. The university has done a lot to fix up this dump of a city. The CAE area has cheap housing and some decent growth and schools in Lexington County.

Nashville by far and away for a metro area, and Athens for a smaller city.
