A Scotsman once said to me:
You know the difference between a $25 bottle of scotch and one for $75? $50
Take that as you will. There are a lot of distinctions based on region. Try different bottles from different regions and figure out what you like. If you're lucky, there's a scotch club in your town and you can hang out with some of the more experienced drinkers and get to try out a good variety of scotches and learn about the various subtleties that exist from region to region.

That's because in Scotland, scotch is crazy cheap due to location. In Europe scotch is cheaper than jack daniels.
