I think it is. As you said 50th was around 25 points per game.
Last season Oregon allowed 22.3 points per game and Ohio St. allowed 22.1:

Your "last five years" perspective doesn't really count because Saban is ruining the curve. When looking at last year teams giving up over 20 points per game were in the hunt.

Ok then In scoring defense, 2 of the last 8 BCSCG participants were ranked outside the top 15. Of the 4 playoff teams, 1 was ranked outside the top 35, and you saw what tOSU Oregon did to those teams.
You can spin it all you want, but defense still wins championships, and the numbers prove it. Again, a mediocre defense is not going to win a title unless a Cam Newton type player is under center, and I don't think aTm, or anyone else, has a player like that on the roster.
