Diaz made a name for himself over there before leaving and getting scapegoated in an ugly Mack Brown situation at Tejas. But it seems like last year was one of the best Dawg Defenses since Joe Lee Dunn was going sock optional on the sidelines in Starkville.

So it looks like a good coordinator to add back into the mix, but some really big losses from a personnel standpoint. If you would, break down what we can expect to see from a change in philosophy standpoint, and a change in personnel.

As I recall, your Secondary was somewhat of a weak link. The Front 7 is where the hay was made for State last year. Will this change at all moving forward?

In 2010, the State front seven was one of the most physical in the SEC and entire country. Diaz did that in just one year.

I expect nothing less in 2015. Losing McKinney's leadership and talent will hurt, but they have talented players behind him who can provide adequate production. Their secondary should be improved as well, although I am not as familiar with the players they have returning there.

Every guy on our D that will start this year had considerable playing time last year. The secondary being the weak link was because of Collin's platoon management of rotating units even when the current unit needed to stay in. Diaz will have the best players available on the field so our secondary stats should be much better.

Wait wait, how can Diaz play the best players when Dan only plays the older players? Or are the best players the upperclassmen in 2015?

DLine will be more talented. Jones will start this year finally and Nick James is in shape. Our DT's if they play to potential will be among the SEC's best
AJ Jefferson takes over for Smith at DE- AJ plays the run better but doesn't rush the QB like Smith did. Other DE Ryan Brown started last year and is a draft pick.
Depth is inexperienced and needs to answer questions.

LB- Benni Brown returns. Richie Brown takes over for McKinney. Richie played a lot last year and only had 20 tackles less than McKinney. Richie also won SEC player of the week last year. 4 star Gerri Green backs up after redshirting. Replacing Matt Wells is going to be key much, much more than losing McKinney

CB's- best in the SEC. Redmond and Calhoun will be off the draft board by round 3 next April. Jiles returns after being hurt in 2014 as the nickle guy.

Safety- Kivon Coman is a solid player. Got to find another one to play good football consistently.

Defense will be improved if Jones and James play close to their potential and the safety play gets better

Until those guys leave next offseason. Then the returning guys will become "better than them."

Diaz is very aggressive on D. I am delighted to have him back. Our offense should be very solid this year. If Diaz gets the players to understand his system, we could have another really good year.

Many of the upperclassmen are the better players this year thank goodness. You will see a few older guys playing that shouldn't get as many snaps though. It's the Mullen way

I know, right?

This is their "built-in" excuse, like Tennessee's "we are young" excuse. I guess ours is "injuries."

As long as they don't play against a Mormon they should be fine.

Diaz isn't the second coming of Dick LeBeau but he tends to put solid defenses on the field. The Texas situation was a long developing boil that just happened to start oozing pus when he got there. I am not sure any DC could have made a difference with the Whorns.

Just run the triple option on State and you should be fine

Yeah, really.

Defense should be improved. LBs may slip off a little but DL and secondary should be better - but remember the secondary was shite last year, so its hard to be worse there.

Mississippi State's season is going to come down to offensive line play. State could be anywhere from 5-7 with crappy OL play to 10-2 with great OL play. That is the only position group that you really should worry about with State. Oh, and an injury to 15 would be killer.

You realize we didn't even have a D coordinator when we played yall? Correct? A team hung with your "vaunted" triple option who had no defensive coordinator.

Considering we have two quality RBs and a 250 pound monster third string RB running the wishbone actually doesn't sound that bad. We even have good running QBs on the bench.

I can tell you are pretty young by that exact statement. I love Dak and am grateful for what he has done for us so far but State has never, in the history of our program, been stacked at QB like we are now. God forbid but an injury to Dak and we are still a bowl team. Next year we will get to see what Nickie Fitz can do. He is more pro style but without the statuesque speed of Russell. It is truly a great time to be a Dawg.

I'm sure undoubtedly the best player in your program's history will be replaced with ease

There was an earlier thread about why everyone has Moo state last in the west. This is the very reason. When you aspire to this level of greatness, you will never be a serious competitor.
