Unfortunately, the damage is already done for La'el. The difference between the #10 pick and the first second round pick (#33) is > $5 million. The difference between pick #33 and the last pick in the draft is < $3 million. The minimum UDFA salary is only 1 million less than that.
Worse, you could make some projections about how much that $5 mil would be worth if Collins had, say, gone on to invest most of it in stocks, mutuals, bonds, etc. The numbers would go up logarithmically, not linearly, which means, of course, that the more money you have the more money you make.
To put it simply, La'el already lost more money than he stands to lose going forward. He will never make it back. That life is over and I feel really bad for him.
