A combination of the 2. Pre-season built up expectations for every West team, but that is not attainable. When you play each West team, it is literally impossible for everyone to have 8+ wins.

When you only play 1 or 2 games against legit OOC competition, it is difficult to get a real read on talent or ranking. See South Carolina last season early. Were they really a top 15 team? nope.

Do away with preseason rankings, and no rankings until 6 weeks in. That will solve your problem.
