Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox opened the spring national signing period by announcing Friday that Michael Edwards of Westland, Mich., has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend UGA and play next season for the Bulldogs.

Edwards, at 6-9, 225 pounds, is completing his senior year at John Glenn High School in the suburban Detroit town of Westland. In his final season at John Glenn, he averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and two steals for the Rockets. He earned All-State honors by the Detroit Free Press and MLive.com and was recently rated the No. 4 senior in the state by PrepHoopsMichigan.com.

“We are very excited to add Michael into our program,” Fox said. “He brings an element of length and athleticism that will benefit our team in the coming years. Michael comes from a great family and we are thrilled to have him coming to Athens.”

The Bulldogs have now signed players from Michigan in two consecutive years. Pontiac native Yante Maten averaged 5.0 points and 4.3 rebounds in his freshman year at Georgia in 2015.

Edwards is the fourth high school senior to have signed with Georgia for the Class of 2014-15. During the early signing period last November, the Bulldogs also welcomed guard Will “Turtle” Jackson from Athens, forward Derek Ogbeide of Mableton, and forward E’Torrion Wilridge of Beaumont, Texas, to the program. Georgia completed the 2015 season with 12 players on athletic grants-in-aid, including a 3-man senior class of Marcus Thornton, Nemi Djurisic and Taylor Echols.

Kid looks to have great touch around the rim and pretty decent athleticism. He may need a touch more physicality but that will come with the college weight room and training. One thing I think he needs to develop a lot is his off hand. Hopefully Fox can put in the same work on him that he did with Marcus.
