What constitutes the best rivalry? Back about 16, 17 years ago Finebaum claimed that FSU-UF was the best rivalry in the country. His basis for this was the national championship decides this. THat is a big name but not exactly the "best" rivalry.
As far as two teams and fanbases go in college sports the Iron Bowl is right up there with anything. There is not a more intense, meaningful nerve racking game. If you are not a fan of either school you dont see it but thats not what constitutes a rivalry. A rivalry is developed between 2 schools. THe outside world doesnt matter.
BAMA-LSU is a good game with intensity but as far as hate thats all one sided.
Same with Ole Miss-Bama. State-Bama. UT-Bama is big because of tradition.
As far as fanbases, teams and schools hating each other equally the State-Ole Miss game is the only SEC rivalry that would compare to the Iron Bowl.
The Iron Bowl, in the SEC is, was and will be the best rivalry. THere isnt anything close to that game to us. What Arkie or LSU fans think doesnt matter. This is between Bama and AU. If you havent lived it you can't understand it. You have no concept of what that game does to you.

Oh we have a "concept" of what it does to y'all. We hear the news reports of family shootings, etc.

Can't understand two teams from the same state playing each other?

Call BS on the hate. Not the searing black-hearted hate of the Iron Bowl or even the Egg and Magnolia bowl but it's not one-sided. I work with a number of Gumps who all mark the LSU game second only to Auburn and have done so for more than a decade.

You don't really know the Reb/Tiger history if you believe that. This long-time bitter rivalry has heated up once again with the Reb's performance on the upswing in recent years.

I really can't emphasize that enough. If you enjoy streaks against a team no matter how good or bad they are, beating a team when it's down even more so than a good team from another SEC school or OOC (if your rival is OOC) then you have a rivalry.
The outside world can go to hell on this issue. Beating even a suckass Bama or UF team is better than beating a number 1 (and yeah, yeah, haters go ahead mention the current streaks). That's just the way it is imo.
In basketball our rival will always be UK despite the fact that they win most of the time and Kentuckers will tell you so too.
