Yea, I think this is a super intriguing and interesting hire with what seems like some really interesting upside potential. I think, because I watch the NBA a lot and listen to and read about the NBA a lot, that Avery Johnson was a decent NBA coach. He wasn't a master X's and O's guy, but he wasn't a dope either. He honestly seemed to have the problem a lot of college football coaches have when they go to the NFL, that he liked to manage every little thing that happened. Professionals don't love that, and eventually it wears thin. ESPECIALLY when you aren't winning.

I think that he has a unique skillset that SHOULD translate well to the college game : he has a great personality, he has a famous name/face/voice from his time playing, coaching and being on TV, he is a people person, he is a great guy, everyone he meets seems to come away liking him (except Deron Williams who is a bitch). On top of that he has legitimate connections with Texas AAU ball and knows the AAU circuit from his time as a dad with his kid.

However, he has never coached in college. He has never dealt with college time restrictions. He has never dealt with moronic 18 year old kids (other than his own). He may lose his mind and the kids may hate him. I really have no idea. That is the risk.

With all that said, I think the possible rewards outweigh the risks, and for a basketball program like ours the potential ceiling and national spotlight that this will bring far outweighs the negatives. And it really outweighs our other potential candidates.

So I am happy and excited, but I understand that this isn't a slam dunk like Saban was. I think we all do.
