Up until three years ago, I didn't follow LSU closely; so I can't answer this question ...
... but in light of the complaints LSU fans have about Chavis today, I'm wondering whether or not most LSU folks have always felt this way about him?
It's crazy that a guy who was so seemingly disliked was able to stay in BR as long as he did.
Or are the complaints about him relatively new?

The total lovefest with Chavis turned after the first last second loss to Bama in 2012. Then, 2013 happened where LSU finally had an offense and the defense was suspect. A lot were grumpy during that year. This past year, he had a lot of criticism early in the year and then he inserted Kendell Beckwith and it all stopped until the Bama game and then finally the bowl game but he was gone already by then.

Chavis' faults have been harped on for years by LSU fans, but we also recognized that he is a very good DC. The main reason he's taking the thrashing that he is from LSU fans is the way he left.

He was suppossedly a man of integrity and loyal to a fault, which now looks like a load of crap. In 6 years Les Miles got him a 300% pay increase from his 1st year to his last, and let him run the defense without any interference. In turn, Chavis left for a division rival for no other reason than he wanted to be paid as much as Boom. When LSU wouldn't pony up he ducked out the backdoor.
