just curious what you idiots think, I've never really bought into this argument much that the local pro teams like the Chiefs/Rams are hurting the Tigers much, but some people really eat this line of crap up.

While Sippi and Bama don't have pro teams, neither do Arky, KY and SC, and I just don't see that it matters all that much. If you have the population to support a pro team you can support college or not, besides in the SEC football transcends through fans that care little for sports in general.

I know there are gonna be Mizzou fans that think the Rams leaving will help Mizzou but I'm highly skeptical on this being real. And besides with Oakland scraping the bottom in NFL attendance, even more so than the Rams, should't they either be in LA or STL anyway? I know Cali has the population but since when to granola munching hemp wearing frisbee flower childs care about an archaic sport that represents masculinity? The left coast commies and football just don't really add up to a good mixture, regardless of what a billionaire stadium developer does.

Nope.

And it's fricking retarded that people like Rick Pitino and Tom Jurich have people here in Louisville thinking that when it comes to pursuing an NBA team with the Yum Center. But sadly, they do.

I believe it hurts attendance and potential popularity. People in Alabama have to be a Bama fan, Auburn fan, or pick a pro team out of state to follow. The easiest choice is Bama because of their success so I there are just more people wanting to go to games, watch on tv, an buy crimson crap.

It definitely does. There's nobody I've met since moving to Florida that's nearly as rabid about any college team as lots of people in Arkansas are. And Florida is a much better college sports state than it is a pro sports state. All of the pro teams are shite, but they still definitely steal a lot of the attention.

No validity to the argument.

Some people have limited entertainment funds, so yes, it can hurt. How much is probably driven by opinion.

Yes. Just look at Tennessee. Their football program started to decline not long after the Titans and Predators arrived. I think they would be much closer to the level of Alabama football if there were no pro sports teams in their state.

As was previously mentioned, some have limited funds to spend on game attendance and/or licensed gear. If you're a TAMU fan (but not necessarily a RABID fan) in Dallas, you can spread that money around to TAMU, the Cowboys, Rangers, Mavs, and Stars. If you're in Arkansas, the Hogs are pretty much the only game in town. To believe otherwise is foolish. This is tRant. Not everyone takes their CFB as seriously as we do.

Nope. There are a lot of New Orleans people that don't like LSU, but it's not because they're die hard saints fans and can only choose one, it's because they like to be contrarian douche bags and root agains them.

Of course it "hurts". The more choices to spend discretionary income and time.

Pretty naive to think its not a factor.

Good thread OP.

USC became a lot more popular in L.A. partially because of their lack of a pro team.

I think it does impact to some degree, but not all that much. I rarely watch pro anything. I have very little interest. If I didn't have a direct connection with a school team, I probably wouldn't bother watching CFB all that much either.

Mizzou had one of the larger Big 8 stadiums.

Mizzou sucks in comparison to many because the administration basically tried to pull the plug on the program for a while and essentially killed a couple decades of growth, fan-wise, stadium-wise, quality-wise.

The whole thing was basically on pause for twenty years. Now that it's back it will grow as the fanbase grows. Everything else is just excuses.

I think the opposite is true. Football fans love football and rooting for one team probably "spills over" into rooting for the other.

Not in the south college sports are king down here. Up north and out west it is a different story though.

All of my friends from STL give zero fricks about the rams.
LA County alone has over 10 million people. It's asinine LA doesn't have an NFL team.

It's possible. With the costs associated with attending either venue it would seem some would have to choose between Pro or college games. It would also depend on how successful the college or pro team is I guess.

I think Memphis fans would be the best group of people to ask about this. The Grizzles have only been there since the year 2001.

NCAA Basketball attendance 1970-2014

Its hard to gauge from the attendance numbers. Memphis attendance spiked in the year 2001 from 12000 to 16000 for some odd reason. Its not like Memphis was particularly good in those years. It might even imply Memphis got a boost from a pro team. The new arena wasn't ready until 2004.

Yes, I'm sure that billionaire stadium developer doesn't see any benefit to relocating his team to Southern California.
