Gottfried beating Nova yesterday got me thinking about which coaches "got away" from each SEC school in the big 2 and went on to have success elsewhere, here's my list:
Bama: Gottfried
Auburn: Cliff Ellis
Ole Miss: Tubs
LSU: Saban
Mizzou: Mike Anderson
State: Stans
A&M: Bear
Vols: Kiff
Vandy: Franklin
Florida: Urb
Kentucky: Pitino
Georgia: Richt (in 2017 or so)
South Carolina/Arkansas: Holtz

I think Spurrier was bigger than Meyer for UF
Also for Arkansas you can argue Sutton or Ken.
Didn't Carolina hire Cremins and he backed out like Altman did at Arkansas?

Bear >>>>>>> Pitino for UK. UK basketball has had plenty of success post-Pitino.

It's definitely Bryant for UK. They should've treated him the same as the Nazi.

Yes he did.
Bobby has regretted that many times since.
He ended-up at C of C after he finally left Ga Tech.
What he did had a lot to do with his wife as well as with George Felton.
Most Gamecock fans have forgiven Bobby and, ironically, Mike McGee acted swiftly and hired Eddie Fogler away from Vandy.

Bear had one double digit winning season at Kentucky in 8 years, you think he starts a Bama like dynasty suddenly after year 9? uh, no. he started winning big when he had access to better players, exactly like Saban at LSU/Bama, he didn't win shite at Mich St.
Pitino would've won multiple championships had he stayed at UK, Tubby won one with his players then nothing, and Gillespie? ha!

I highly doubt that.

Damn we hired Tubby Smith from Tulsa... He was on the verge of turning the UGA BB culture around....
quote:
On March 29, 1995, Smith accepted the head coaching job at the University of Georgia, becoming the school's first African-American head coach. In two seasons, he led the Bulldogs to a 45–19 record, including the first back-to-back seasons of 20 wins or more in school history. His teams achieved a Sweet 16 finish in the 1996 NCAA Tournament and lost in the first round of the 1997 NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs defeated Clemson to open the '96 tournament before upsetting the top-seeded Purdue Boilermakers.
Then frickin' UK came calling...

Uh, I'm pretty sure the old guy retired, hasn't coached again, and then helped us got Spurrier. I don't think anyone thinks he "got away"
Cremins for basketball is the correct answer.

For UGA football, I'd say that letting Erk Russell go to fricking Statesboro to start up Ga Southern's program and then hiring Ray Goff over him as Dooley's replacement would classify as "letting oen get away."

What do you mean by "got away?"
I feel much worse about hiring Mike Archer instead of Steve Spurrier than I do about replacing Saban with Miles.

Kinda ambiguous really... I listed Tubby for UGA going to UK. Prolly nothing UGA coulda done to keep him, so maybe that's not letting one "get away"... Same with Saban & LSU, he wanted to give the pro's a shot & there's nothing that LSU could've really done...
Tylers Erk Russell analogy is prolly better for UGA...

got away means exactly that, doesn't matter if they could do anything about it or not. I know LSU couldn't out pay an NFL team.
