WHy is everyone so fascinated with this subject these days?

Man has always been fascinated by the end times and what it would be like. Look at movies and books from many years ago and it has always been a popular subject.

Not sure I would agree with this. But it is definitely the best world I know of right now.

I am not convinced the end is near. But I am not convinced that it is not near, either.

It has, I agree...but I don't think it has been so well covered in a such a short period of time as it has been in since 9/11. You cant sling a dead cat without hitting a TV Show, a book or a movie dealing with a dystopian theme. There are a lot of people who will claim it is due to current events such as 9/11, the financial collapse, even the election of a black president (I like that one but it is meritless). I think the true source of all the angst is the fact that we live in as near a utopian society as man has even experienced and we fell guilty OR fear going back to a time when we might have to cook a meal and God drive to a store to buy a pound of coffee instead of having the man in brown bring it to us.
