I wrote an essay in college arguing both these points. Hadn't thought about it since, until reading your post. I recall sooooo wanting to persuade my conservative white professor that navigable rivers and untameable animals had postponed the advancement of Africa. I remember it a heartfelt struggle at convincing myself.

I don't know if I'd used Thomas Sowell as a source. Doubt I'd heard of him then. Interesting character. Definitely someone worth reading.
