INDIANAPOLIS — Washington took the first step toward helping Robert Griffin III succeed in Year 4 of his NFL career by hiring an experienced quarterbacks coach.

The second step is upgrading the team’s aging offensive line, which played a part, along with Griffin’s indecision in the pocket, in surrendering 58 sacks last season — 31st-most in the NFL.

Coach Jay Gruden and general manager Scot McCloughan didn’t get a chance to evaluate South Carolina’s A.J. Cann, considered the top guard in the 2015 draft class, at January’s Senior Bowl. The 6-foot-3, 311-pound Cann skipped the event with a mild knee sprain to ensure he arrived in peak form for this week’s NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Projected as a late first-round or early second-round pick, Cann is among the linemen who warrants close study by Washington’s brass in the drills and interviews that follow.
