I had mentioned this awhile back as that is what he mostly played at Memphis this past year, and laid out that we have the personnel to mix it in if we he wanted to.

Well, it appears he'll do just that. The other day I saw a quote from him saying he'd mix the 3-4 in. I think this is particularly intriguing for guys like Harris, Frazier and Newsome using their speed off the edge and gives us more ways to use Beckner and Brantley. Our 3 best lineman may be DTs next year and we could get them all on the field at the same time with this look.

I like the idea. Not a total shift, but we have the guys to run it and more looks for the offense is a good thing.

The players I see as potential dominant 3-4 LBs are Terez Hall and Frankie Ags.

I certainly hope they don't abandon #DLineZou in any substantive manner. Not simply for the publicity and drawing card it's become, but because I'm not sure how it would hold up, long-term, in the super-sized SEC. If it's to generate a pass rush if we're struggling, great. Otherwise, I hate the idea of purposely creating an extra size mismatch up front against teams like Arkansas and Georgia.

And I really hate the idea of going a 3-4 full-time if Coach Kul eventually moves on, but if Odom loves it I could definitely see him doing it.

Does or has anyone in the SEC used a 3-4 as a base defense recently?

I have read in several places he played 3-4 out of necessity. His defense had a shortage of quality DL and the 3-4 was part of the solution.

If we see much 3-4 at all, I would think it would simply be an attempt to throw the other team off and give them a new look to deal with.

I agree that going to a 3-4 would waste one of our biggest strengths a bit. Coach Kul gets too much out of the material given to him to not give him 4 pieces to work with.

Odom did not say he'd mix in the 3-4. He said he'd mix in aspects and pieces of the 3-4, which Steckel had already been doing. It isn't a major change if any.
