Not really off the beaten-path, though. It has three exits on I-65.

ETA: The only reasonably fun thing to do in Athens is the Fiddler's Convention. It was a great place to grow up, but there's not exactly anything cool going on.

Athens State and the surrounding historical district are pretty. The college is the oldest in the state. You can see the first governor's house in Belle Mina, and the oldest incorporated town nearby in Mooresville.
