i'm not trying to defend these numbers but I bet the attrition rate for the overall student population is pretty high also. many high schools just don't do a good job of preparing students for college and many students just don't make the transition. some of those come back later but i'm sure the numbers don't reflect that.
that being said, great high school athletes get "pushed" through high school and if they find themselves struggling to start they just don't have the academic background to make it.
in short, we coddle athletes and many of them get pushed aside if they don't become stars in college. so I completely understand these attrition rates.
